Silence

September 17, 2021,

A friend posted this on Facebook this morning and it spoke to me.   Jean Arp was on to something and we don't even know when He wrote this. (I googled Arp and he died in 1966.   He was a German and French sculptor, artist and poet)

A THOUGHT FOR TODAY:

Soon silence will have passed into legend. Man has turned his back on silence. Day after day he invents machines and devices that increase noise and distract humanity from the essence of life, contemplation, meditation. Tooting, howling, screeching, booming, crashing, whistling, grinding, and trilling bolster his ego. -Jean Arp, artist and poet ( Sep 1887-1948)

I wonder what Jean Arp would think about the noise in today's world.  People didn't watch TV back then with the screaming commercials.  Computers and Social Media was unheard of.  You Tube and streaming videos were in the future.

Have you noticed that almost every documentary has to have some kind of background sound running? Sometimes the background noise covers up what the message is about or what they are trying to teach us.  Why? It's one of my hubby and my pet peeves and when we can't hear the dialogue we'll leave the channel.

We need silence in our life.

Here is an article on the 7 benefits of silence with a Ted talk included.

I have a very love/hate relationship with silence. I have been able to identify why but I do need the noise to feel safer in my life.
I also hate when the music is louder than the commentary and as you, it would prompt me to simply live the channel (no matter how interested in the program I could be). Poor editing makes me sad lol

Two people who work in television - one is an editor and the other a producer said that the director or whoever finalizes the shows come into the control room and flip the switch that starts the background noise. I don't have a clue why but yes we will leave a show where the noise covers over voices. I've even heard the same "song" played in loops behind a show. I'm sensitive to noise and have you ever been listening to a You Tube soft program when an over loud ad interrupts it all? Yes we could subscribe and not have commercials but the louder and more irritating a commercial is, I'm sure I won't buy their product. Thank you for your input and I don't have a silent mind. I don't like audio books and I don't have music playing in my says either.

Silence can be very meditative or simply nature noise without any 'fillers' but so often hard to come by. Sometimes I find noise pollution the most invasive kind.

Yes, Sue, noise pollution is so invasive. We have a busy road behind us and there is almost always traffic. But it doesn't bother me too much - I just hope it doesn't get louder.

I want to live somewhere more remote so I can have more silence, but then people think you're weird if you want to get away from it all lol. Happy Blogging! Elle/EOTC xx

Elle, I did live somewhere more remote that was quiet but at our age we needed to get closer to civilization and on a one story house. I feel safer and will put up with the street noise. Our development is quiet though and nice. I hope you find more remote. I let people think I'm weird for the most part. LOL Happy Blogging to you.
